Japanese Team Rider, Kanato with Snake...

Our 16 year old Japanese team rider Kanato recently stayed in our home for 3 months whilst soaking up some Aussie sun and surfing the Gold Coast's finest waves....whilst meeting the neighbours one fine weekend, Kanato, to his great surprise also met our neighbours' lovely pet, a QLD Coastal Carpet Python. This one was just 2 years old and still had another third to add to it's 2 metre length and forearm width girth...

Thinking of our friends in Japan as they try to get back on their feet

These photos were taken near the nuclear power plant outskirts in Fukushima in 2010.

They may never be able to surf there again due to contamination

" Dear Friends,

This is the biggest disaster ever seen in JAPAN.
The earthquake of magnitude 9 overcame the wide coastline at 2:26pm on March 11, and the tsunami attacked from Tohoku to North Kanto in the 30 minutes by being generated in the Tohoku coast. The tsunami waves were 14 metres max in front of the nuclear power plant. The tsunami was made momentarily, attacked the long coastline, and destroyed up to ten kilometres or more inland.

A lot of surf points are scattered in this region. A lot of fatal blows were received. Moreover, a lot of surf shops near the beach disappeared too. Several thousand corpses went up to the coastline in the afternoon though it was uncertain whether there was persons who was surfing there. The above-mentioned life of 10,000 people was over in a moment, they were deprived, resulting in several hundred thousand victims. In addition, damage reached the nuclear plant, the radiation began to leak, and the evacuation order went out to the residents in the 20 kilometre radius. The fire fighting of the nuclear plant continues still as of today, March 26. The number of disaster evacuees keeps increasing too and it has became the worst disaster in the history of Japan.

The surf point from the Tohoku region to North Kanto received a huge amount of damage, and the surf point of Fukushima in particular, received a fatal blow. When it comes to restoration for the future, damage will continue to be serious throughout the rescue operation as it is now. I would like you to please lend help for the revival of Japan. Please hold out help to Japan that fights against the earthquake, the tsunami, the radioactivity, and the harmful rumours. The people who lost family, friends, houses, pets and everything are asking for help.

It is not time for tears in Japanese right now, we never give up and we will work hard until the country is revived. "

LOVE FOR JAPAN | 50% Pledge

As you may know, Japan has been a huge supporter of Almond; as well as many other surfboard labels. I have had the pleasure of traveling there twice, and have a deep appreciation for the culture, as well as the friends I have made there.

In an effort to give back to the country that has been so supportive of us, we are going to give 50% of the proceeds from our apparel sales for the next month to relief funds to help Japan.

Both online and in-store apparel sales will benefit the relief efforts.

We're so thankful for the people of Japan, so we want to use what little influence we have, in the things that we do, to help out.

Praying for hope and relief for all the people over there.

Mr. Hiromichi Soeda

Tomohiro's dad, Hiromichi Soeda, owns Soeda Surfboards Japan (SSJ) the company that distributes our surfboards in Japan. He is a legendary Japanese surfer who has been charging big waves in Hawaii and Japan for decades.'

Nathan and I got to meet Mr. Soeda while we were in Japan in October. We hung out at the beach with him during our surfboard demo in Shonan. Tomo told us that he had never seen his dad ride a longboard, and he probably hadn't done so since he was a kid. So, of course getting him to paddle out on a log became an instant goal for the trip.

During the demo, without the slightest prompting from any of us, Mr. Soeda zipped up his wetsuit, snatched Nathan's 9'9 off of the sand and headed toward the water. Needless to say, I was thrilled. I snapped a photo of him carrying Nate's board, then climbed up onto the sea wall to get a photo of him in trim on a log. The whole peanut gallery on the beach was loving it, I'm just glad I was able to snap a photo. Not sure if it was enough to convert him to a part-time logger.

Tomo is home!

Welcome home Tomohiro.

This means we can start measuring people for wetsuits again!

"See you in Tokyo!"

While we were in Tokyo, we went to dinner with Yusuke Hanai. He took us to an incredible sushi restaurant on the 14th floor of a high-rise in Shibuya.

This guy is one of the most enjoyable people you'll meet, and of course, an amazingly talented artist.

"Go your own way"

SURF JAPAN

U-SKE sent over some surfing photos that he shot while we were there.

We didn't meet U-SKE (Yusuke Suzuki) until the day after our magical dream session, but he did get some good shots of a few small says around Hiratsuka.

Sunrise Surf Session - Day 3

Nathan, Tomo and I had a magical surf session at the rivermouth by Tomo's house in Japan.

Here are some photos by amigo U-Ske of Nate and I getting ready for a surf.

p.s. the sun rises over the ocean there...

Singlefin All Stars '10 - Day 2

Nathan, Tomo and I participated in the Single Fin All Stars contest in Shizoka last week. We arrived at the beach just before sunrise, and we didn't leave until after sunset. Needless to say, it was the longest beach day of my life. Because of the party at Ron Herman the night before, we slept like 3 hours before we had to make the 3 hour drive from Hiratsuka to Shizoka. It was quite a wild introduction to Japan, but we had a blast.

I got a crazy micro-fiber towel, designed by our friend Mr. Hanai.

Nate made it to the final!

Yuta and Ryoko were there!

And people seemed pretty stoked on Nathan's noseride take-offs.

Packing Light - Japan Day 1

We traveled with enough surfboards and equipment for the whole Brady Family.

Pre-dawn adventure.

Heading Home

Nathan and Dave are headed home.

Kill the time waiting for them by listening to this song...

The PawnShop kings

Another musical treat for you this week.

We're heading home from Japan tomorrow!

See you all soon.
