Nathan Grey has been busy...

" What started off as a 6’4” Alaia fish hybrid, now 6ft long. made from Paulownia scraps I had left over.Which I chambered and vented and then finished it with 100% Tung oil. I made the small keels with Solomon island black wood{ queen ebony}."

"10ft stand up paddle board built in paulownia and balsa and a bit of cedar."

" A couple of my hand planes for bombing shore break barrels, small one made in Balsa and the big one in Paulownia."

" They both have deep 3/4” inch concave through them."

Nathan is a great craftsman and an innovative guy who build furniture and wooden boards. You can check out what else he has been up to at : www.nathanielgrey.com.au

Wooden Simmons

Nathan Grey from Sydney has just finished building this great looking wooden Mini Simmons.

5ft 6 " Jet tail 18" , 21" , 18" x 2 5/8" with a hull entry which blends into a subtle rolled V then blends into the channels.

Nathan says that the board is glassed with epoxy 6oz top and 4 oz bottom, And he has spray finished it with satin auto acrylic.

Nathan will be bringing it with him to the Wooden Board Day on the Sunday 8th of August at The Alley.

Nathan Grey builds a nice board.

Just got these great shots of Nathans latest project. A twin keel fish for Jasper in Victoria. All Paulownia and Western Red Cedar , 5ft 10" x 20" 7/8 x 2" 3/4 , flat bottom to a deep single concave out through the fins.

He has another little hybrid on the go as well. " A 5ft 6" Bob Simmons crossed with a Daniel Thomson jet Tail." He hopes to have that ready for August the 8th. It is great to see such a nice board built in beautiful timbers.

Nathan is down in Sydney , if you want to check him out :

Nathan needed a bigger fish.

Nathan Grey down in Sydney builds some pretty sweet boards and he just sent me these great shots to share.
" Here are some pictures of a 6'4’’ 19.5’’ 2.5’’ rocket fish I built.
I needed a longer sleeker fish for those bigger days, and she flies."

" The board is built from paulownia with a 6 ounce epoxy glass job, bottom shape is a fair bit of V through the nose then blending to a deep double barrel concave."

" The board is really bladed out through the tail and has a fair bit of passive flex through her."

" Sorry about the pictures with wax on the board, the swell came up before I had a chance to get photos of her clean.

Hey I am looking forward to getting me and the family up to your end of the country for the wooden board day in August.
And hopefully I will get some time between now and then to get a couple of funky ideas I have built. "

Cheers
Nathan

Nathan Grey and another sweet board - The Show Pony

" I put this together while waiting for a delivery of wood for a bookcase I was building.
The show pony is a wooden version of the white pony that Richard Kenvin and I think Larry Mabile came up with.
Board info
5,4” -22” -2, 5/8”
Built from Balsa and some red cedar, Bottom shape is a hull upfront blending into a bonzer like double concave that runs in between the fins.
The fins I laid up with paulownia in center with 6oz carbon fibre then red cedar, they have a nice firm flex to them.

The board flies, a bit like the Sim fish but with a little more bite from the shallow fish tail.
Cant wait to get it on to a point break in the future, but for now sand sucking Bondi close outs will have to do.

OH yeah the book case was not finished on time."

More wood from Nathan Grey

Another fine example of Nathan's skills. A 5ft 9" twin keel fish. It has a displacement hull like a Sim Fish . Cedar top and Balsa rails and bottom , with a 4 oz epoxy glass job. Check it out August 9th. @ The Alley.

Nathan Grey's "New Wood"

Here is a new board from Sydney board builder and wood worker Nathan Grey.
"A 6ft asymetrical fish inspired by Carl Ekstrom, this one was built in paulownia and is a chambered/box construction with queen ebony fins and fin box’s.
And I finished it with a natrual oil burnished in up to a 1500 grit, very slick finish.
It has a slight hull up for smooth entry then with a single concave running down through the fins."
Nathan will be bringing this and other boards with him to The Wooden Board Day on the 9th of August. There are going to be plenty of boards worth checking out. Nathan has built some great boards in the past , but this is raising the bar.

Hollow Balsa mini Simmons by Nathan Grey

Nathan has just finished and road tested this little gem  - " 5-7" 22.5" 2.5" hollow balsa simfish, with a S deck and underneath hull up front blending to single concave. I have surfed it a few times and the thing goes like the clappers."

Nathan Greys latest little fish

Nathan Grey is a great wooden board builder out of Sydney and his latest little fish is 5-9" 20.5" 2.5" hollow cedar fish with solid balsa rails.

" It has got a bit of V through the nose and then flat blending into a single

concave that runs through the keels. I have not surfed this one since it is for a young guy in Perth, I have been

very tempted."

Mate I am sure the guy in Perth will be mighty stoked to have this little craft.

We look forward to seeing you up here with some boards in August.

Hollow Cedar fish with solid Balsa rails by Nathan Grey

Nathan Grey is a great wooden board builder out of Sydney and has forwarded these pics of this  5-9" 20.5" 2.5" hollow cedar fish with solid balsa rails.

" It has got a bit of V through the nose and then flat blending into a single concave that runs through the keels. I have not surfed this one since it is for a young guy in Perth, I have been very tempted. "

Mate I would think the guy in Perth will be mighty please with his board.
