A classic shape nicely executed.

Some nice work by Tony Crimmins from Brisbane as he gets ready to laminate the rails of his latest board. All Paulownia frame and skins with a Cedar accent down the stringer line.

New board coming to life

Peter Mo applying the gloss coat to Tony Crimmins latest board. That sure makes the colour pop in the timber. Great looking board Tony. He will be glad he got it finished before Christmas as Tony is flat out in Brisbane with the floods in his roll of police logistics. He has plenty of long days ahead of him.

Good friend Tony Crimmons form Brisbane has just finished this board and headed off to Peter" Mo" to have it glassed here on the Gold Coast. Great looking board once again . Tony builds a beautiful board.

Ride report - " Surfed for about 2 hours off the shops at Lennox in 1 - 2ft clean beachbreaks. didn't leak (very important), paddles pretty well, good volume, caught heaps of waves, took a while to get used the nose riding rocker, not as loose as I expected after riding the pintail yesterday however moving the fin up may fix that, trims nice and gets good momentum. Suspect that it will be at home in small point waves, would like it to be a bit more agile so will keep playing with fins until I get it feeling like I can change direction when I want. 10" greenough fin looks at home"

All tidied up and ready to shape the rails

Tony Crimmins from Brisbane has just finished gluing on the rails , nose and tail blocks of his all Paulownia board.

A nice herring bone finish on the nose.

At 9ft 6" it has a nice outline .

Tony Crimmins with a new board under way

Tony started with setting out the outline on his work bench and then setting up the 8mm ( laminated 2 x 4mm) Paulownia stringer. You can see he has used metal brackets to set the stringer up nice and true.
Pretty solid stringer, a great starting point. You only get a good result by making sure you have a good starting point with stringer and frames all nice and true and that they all fit together well.
All Paulownia skins glued up and excess trimmed off.
He has glassed the under side of the deck and the bottom
A bit more strength added in the nose area as there isn't much thickness there when it is all shaped down.
Frames all set up and top rail band on
Extra blocks glued in for the goretex breather to be fitted later
More timber needed for the beefing up of the fin area.
He has trued everything up and made sure it lines up to the outline and that all the frames are level so as to not get any twist. And then he has glued the small pieces of wood on the ends of the frames to hold it all in place.
Glue it up , all hands on deck with the clamps and sand bags. You can only do this if you have everything lined up and in place and locked down and able to take the weight. Otherwise when you add the weight it will twist and distort the frames. Not good.
Deck on. Those small pieces of wood glued on the ends of the frames take the weight of the sand bags and hold everything in place as the glue goes off. Once the deck is on with all those glue points on all those frames , then it is very strong and not going anywhere. Put the time in to fit everything and check that it goes together without lots of effort in a dry run or two to make life easy for yourself. Have all your gear ready. Clamps ready and in easy reach. With this many you may need a spare set of hands as well.With paulownia be sure not to have tha clamps mark the top surface too much as you will have to sand it out. Line the sand bags down the middle of the board to hold the deck skin in place and lined up to your marks. Then clamp away.

Tony Crimmins and his modified Jensen model.

Tony Crimmins attended the Paul Jensen course at the Eco Village Currumbin in August and this is where he started this board. He decided that he would modify the standard 7ft 3" and make it into a pin tail. And instead of the laminated cork and bending ply rails go with laminated Paulownia and a Cedar pin line.As you can see he has a great eye for detail and has done a great job. 4mm Paulownia and Cedar planking over a ply frame. His sister at Lennox Heads has put her hand up for it. Nice touch.

She's finished...

Tony Crimmins just picked up his latest board from glasser Peter Mo. Pretty nice job. 10ft board and she came in at 11.2 kg. It is a ply frame with 6mm Paulownia skins and 6 + 6 on the deck and 6 on the bottom. As Tony said ... "She should be just the ticket for gliding across a few little sliders at Currumbin."

Ready for glassing

Tony Crimmins , has been working away on this beauty and it is now ready for glassing. Paulownia over a plywood frame with Cedar and Paulownia nose and tail blocks. He has done a great job and I look forward to seeing it in the flesh in August.

Tony Crimmins new project progress report

Tony is building a Paulownia skinned longboard using Paul Jensen's building method. He has angled the nose to allow for a nose block detail. And as you can see from his and other home builders , they become very resourceful  with things like shaping stands and work spaces. You don't need a lot of gear and special tools. Just be challenged by the whole project and quietly chip away at it.

Here are a couple of shots of his latest project which is slowly coming to life. 

" Basically it’s a 9’6” x 23” old school single fin longboard.  Paulownia and ply frame with some nice paulownias planks for the bottom and deck.  I worked pretty hard on the templates with this one – the thicker stringer allowed me to foil the nose and tail down quite fine.  I am keen to see just what the foil looks like when I get the deck on.  Got the timber from John Whitewood at Tyalgum just over the border – it’s great to work with."

Sure looks like a nice shape and should be a real trim machine. Thanks for the pics and keep us posted.

Tony's fish ready for action

Dick Van inspired fish

Tony Crimmins from Brisbane has just sent me his latest board to share. It's a 7ft fish that was modelled on his 7ft 6" Dick Van Straalen . Tony said he wanted  it to be a bit shorter and have a bit more curve in the outline, so he made it half an inch wider and pulled the nose and tail in about a quarter of and inch. Its now ready to head off to the glasser.
