Weathered paulownia Alaia blank
Five years of careful air drying gave the paulownia logs which were used for this alaia a deeply weathered brown colour which is up to a quarter of an inch deep all over the outer surfaces of the logs.
Rather than trimming all this lovely coloured wood off we have carefully fitted the planks together with the edges in their raw state, so that the weathered edges make natural stringer lines on the board.
In order to achieve this the planks in each board are sawn from the same log, so that they fit neatly together without planing of the edges
Two of the planks in each board have a completely weathered face, hence the single brown coloured plank on each sideSee this post for more on alaia, including video and a download on how to make an alaia: http://olosurfer-woodensurfboardsatpipeline.blogspot.com/2009/05/making-alaia-from-paulownia-wood.html.
